It’s Water, Not Kryptonite

This morning greeted us with an overcast sky. For this area, it is unusual to get rain, but when we do, it causes a rift in the space-time continuum, or in the minds of drivers. Mostly the latter.

As I was taking the kids to school, a young man pulled out in front of me, apparently not seeing my big red SUV with all its lights on. Then at the big intersection, one woman was driving fast enough that she locked her brakes when confronted with the red traffic light. She narrowly missed the van in front of me. Driving towards Little One’s school, several drivers fishtailed and skidded. One car was in a ditch.

I forgot to mention, it was a light drizzle, not a raging downpour. My windshield wipers were on their lowest setting.

water on road lol

So I shall stay home, choosing to live over taking chances with the “ZOMG!! I’M GOING TO DIE!!” drivers out there. At least until such time as one kid asks me to get something for some school project.

It’s part of the Murphy’s Mom Law πŸ˜‰

Soothing the Soul

Yesterday I spent the day driving in the rain. Normally that will set me on edge, because I hate driving, for one thing, and I hate dealing with idiot drivers who have no idea how to drive in the rain, for another. I must have seen the aftermath of four accidents, and several road closures, along with one bridge washout.Needless to say, by the time I got home I was beyond tired, and more than a bit grumpy.

But laying in bed after a long day, there is nothing more soothing than the sound of gentle rain falling on your roof. Thankfully, there was no thunder or lightning to disturb the dogs.

As harried as I have been, this morning finds my soul soothed, and my grumpiness gone, as I sit here and enjoy the birds singing and warbling outside, enjoying the freshness of a cool morning.

Of course, once the kids wake up that lovely peace will be shattered, but it is nice while it lasts πŸ˜€

Winter, Sorta

This morning finds my corner of the world in freezing temperatures. Ok, it’s 34* Fahrenheit, which is 1* Celsius for my readers in Metriclands. I’m well aware that some of you living up North think I’m whiny about this. And you would be right. But you would whine too, if you had enjoyed the wonderful warm weather we had through January. It was warm enough for me to wash the vehicles. It was warm enough the weeds were coming up, all confused and happy. It was warm enough that the A/C was kicking in.

I guess it’s time for me to get all the cold weather clothing out and put away the t-shirts. At least I get to clean out that part of my wardrobe.

I guess Winter is a woman, and we are always waiting for her here in Texas πŸ˜‰

Rainy Days and Mondays

I only wish it would rain. That would lift my spirits, not bring me down. I never did understand that song by The Carpenters. Living in a tropical area growing up, rain was always punctual and always welcomed, and living in such a dry area now it is always appreciated when it falls. And now that I’m a mom, Mondays are a BLESSING. There is nothing more relaxing than drinking a hot cup of tea while watching rivulets of rain dance on your window.

I used to drive my mom crazy every afternoon while living in PR, because as soon as it started to rain, I was out the door. Eventually I stopped that habit, but I still love to watch the rain fall. It’s better than Prozac, and cheaper than therapy πŸ˜‰

Captain Obvious

Today it was TruGreen’s day to “treat” my lawn. Of course, I couldn’t water the back because the gentleman placed some Miracle Beansβ„’ on the lawn. However, he did take the time to give me a scolding:

No kidding my front yard is under heat stress! All watering resources are being diverted to the sod!! I swear, sometimes pointing out the obvious is a fruitless endeavor with some people.

General Sod

Most of you will miss the reference in that title. I love being obscure. Anyway, yesterday, our lawn guy came by and did some major work outside. He trimmed the tree out front, cutting down the heavy lower branches. I can finally walk under that tree, when before I had to practically crawl. The kids were not happy to have the tree’s limbs cut, since they liked to climb up and hide in it. And to that I said, tough cookie. He also put down some rich soil and some new sod in the back yard.

My back yard looked awful. It was all covered in hay, with some stray spots of dirt peeking through it. Hubby had transplanted some grass, and it had taken very well, but with the drought the yard looked like it was waiting for either a cow to or a pyromaniac to come strolling by. And the pyromaniac would have been an improvement, y’all. But behold the beauty that is sod!

Ignore the garden hose. I have to water the yard every evening from now on for the next three weeks. The water company is going to just adore me.Β  Oh well, all in the name of beauty, right?

The funny thing is, the dogs will only “go” on the new sod. Ok, it’s not very funny, but at least it’s easier to go clean up πŸ˜‰

Open Thread Friday

My apologies for having not much to write about. Between having friends from out of town, especially the kind thatΒ convinces me into buying more Trollbeads, and getting school supply lists done, back-to-school clothes shopping for kids, and registration and transfers, I am finding nothing to report at Casa de Aggie. It’s a desert here.

My lawn, only not as pretty, or with suck a fantastic view

So, to my few readers I ask: are there any topics you would like me to write about? Feel free to make suggestions!!

And also, feel free to do a raindance or two πŸ˜‰

It’s Hot

It’s quite hot. Very hot. Africa hot.

The humidity doesn’t help either. Here in my corner of Hades, it’s a cool 86* degrees overcast, with 84% relative humidity. It’s also 8:30 AM.By noon, it will be about 97*, and the heat index will make it feel like 105*. And then in the afternoon, it will get hot…

I have a feeling I will be jumping the sprinklers today as I get the patio ready for Eldest’s party tomorrow.

Why couldn’t she have been born in springtime??
