Yesterday was a hectic day. ROTC returned from their Lex trip, Little One was still enjoying a sleepover in the afternoon, and Eldest wanted to practice driving. Short story: I didn’t get to enjoy a visit to a winery as planned. But no matter, because I did have time to make a turkey roast which was delish. And that’s what inspired the question:
Why do we wait to have turkey on Thanksgiving and Christmas??
Now, obviously I didn’t do a whole turkey. That’s just ridiculous. But doing a boneless roast is not hard, and takes only a couple of hours in the oven, which is pretty much what meatloaf or a pot roast take to bake. From now on I think I will make a turkey at at least once a month.
Variety being the spice of Life and all, along with rosemary!

Dang. Once a month, you say? What’s your address, again?
October 22nd, 2012 at 12:45 PM
Oh, c’mon! You can make it yourself and your lovely wife would love it 😀

Heh. You’ve never seen me try to cook. I make PB&J, and some pretty gnarfy (yes…gnarfy) bean-cheese-hotsauce burritos that’ll put hair in places you didn’t have any before, but other than that, I’m pretty much stuck in bachelorhood. Besides, Mrs.Alien hates doing dishes, so even if I cooked, I’d still be stuck doing dishes. Might as well let her cook if I’m gonna be cleaning anyway.

Sounds like an awesome division of labor to me. 😀

It works. Until you have to cook AND clean. Then its just Department of Labor.

Don’t I know it. Hubby is allergic to the kitchen…
October 23rd, 2012 at 8:59 PM
You know, there’s a fairly effective way to break him of his kitchen-allergies….however, this being a PG(ish) bloggy, I’ll leave it to your imagination. And a can of aerosol whipped-cream. And a trip to Fredericks of Hollywood.

What? My avatar doesn’t give it away?? 😉
October 25th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
Heh. I’m a married man. I try* not to look at your avatar too closely. Or for too long. Or copy it to my hard drive (feel free make any inappropriate snickers at the use of “hard” drive in this conversation. And the use of the words “feel” and “free”, as well).
*”try” is not the same as “succeed”

BWAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
I mean, for shame! 😀

Hey, that’s a good idea. I like to keep beef and chicken ‘sticks’ in the fridge. Turkey would make a nice addition. Bread’s not on the diet (30 pounds in 7 weeks, by the way), so no sandwiches, but I like cold turkey (cute, huh?).
It’s on the grocery list.
October 22nd, 2012 at 1:42 PM
You can do all the sandwich trimmings and pass on the bread, too. Looks pretty awesome as a tower of goodliness 😀
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:25 PM
Our first Thanksgiving I made lasagna.
October 22nd, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Heh, and our fist one I made pork chops 😀
October 22nd, 2012 at 3:42 PM
I cook turkey all the time. You can even throw a turkey roast in a crockpot with a can of cranberry sauce and it’s delish.
October 22nd, 2012 at 4:16 PM
ZOMG!!! Gonna try that!
October 22nd, 2012 at 6:50 PM
Don’t forget the gallon or so of Jack marinade. Strictly for color, mind you.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:39 PM
Oooh…caramelly 😀
October 22nd, 2012 at 10:02 PM
It’s pretty much just turkey once a year not counting deli meat for me. Well, *I* don’t cook it, the Parental Units do. Except for this year – I’ve volunteered to do the first deep fried turkey and have Thanksgiving at my house. I’m going to do it the Alton Brown Method.
October 23rd, 2012 at 7:00 AM
My neighbor offered to do one for us this year, but we’ll be visiting inlaws, so I had to pass on it.
I can’t wait for you to give us your report on how you did it 😀
October 23rd, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Fui. My HEB says they’ve stopped stocking turkey roasts because they didn’t sell. Or maybe there’s another term for what you guys are talking about. They did let me have s shop worn frozen ‘roast’ stuffed with chicken and duck, $17 marked down to $3. Not a popular item here.

Butterball boneless turkey roast is what I bought.
Damn Austinites… 😉
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:30 PM
This HEB was in Bee Cave, but that remains close enough to have been Austinated with a big dose of dumb-ass.
Is that Butterball in the frozen food case?
October 23rd, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Yes indeedy!!
October 23rd, 2012 at 8:58 PM
If my wife can find a turkey on sale, she’ll do it any time of the year.
October 23rd, 2012 at 9:01 PM
I would love a deep freezer for that, too 🙂
