Bacchanalia, Texas Style

Yesterday we went to the 9th Annual Wein and Saengerfest hosted in the lovely old German city of New Braunfels. Basically it’s a very large wine tasting featuring mostly wineries from across the state, though some out-of-state wineries were also featured. I didn’t bother much with those, since I was interested in the local stuff that I can get at the grocery store easily. Ok, I didn’t bother with them because I was too busy looking for the Sangria tent.

Which we found right off the bat!!

The way the fest works is, you purchase five tickets for five samples and get a free wineglass. You then have the option to purchase more tickets for $3 each. Total ripoff, but worth it when you consider you are away from the house and having semi-adult conversations with friends your own age. Wait…. Hm…. ok, close to your age. I just realized I was the oldest in the group. Had I realized that yesterday, I would have bought more tickets.

Ignore the manicure, look at the glass!

As soon as we find the Sangria tent, sponsored by a local favorite, Dry Comal Creek Vineyardsβ„’, we fork over two tickets. Yes, it cost two tickets, but you get a full glass of cold, delicious Sangria. And though the temperature was only 88* F (31* C for my Metric friends), the humidity was at about 1,890%, which explains the hellacious storm that came through the area last night, dumping roughly 2 inches and scaring the everloving life out of the dogs and Little One. So at least I can scratch “water the lawn” off my chore list today.

All in all, we had a great time. I only had to buy one extra ticket, so that was good. Like I said, the Sangria was worth two tickets, and I was rather thirsty. Besides, I didn’t have to drive at all. The stars don’t align like that very often, you know πŸ˜‰

For some reason, “Texas” and “wine country” just don’t seem to go together. But, like just about everything else, if there’s a market, there’s someone who will find a way to make it work. Glad you had a good time. You deserved it. πŸ™‚

    It’s climate change. πŸ™„

Wine grapes were grown in 17th century Ysleta, now a part of El Paso. They had to migrate somewhere after El Paso returned to aridity. Central Texas is now dotted with wineries.

Our citrus has given Florida a run, now it’s our wine’s turn. I hear the secret is a dollop of armadillo toe jam in each cask.

Wish you could have gone with us! Although I did notice that while the women were going from winery table to winery table, most of the men were in the pubs and ale houses… πŸ˜€

Heh! that would have been fun!

As for the choice between women and beer, most guys, as long as it may have taken them, have learned to enjoy them separately. So, no problem!

As for the commas, it’s the end of my punctal year – must spend the excess inventory. , , ,

Lucky y’all….we in Hurst got a few drops of rain. Literally. Enough to give the back patio a mild case of chicken pox, but none of the drops overlapped. So I didnt’ really need to rush to finish mowing the lawn, I guess. LOL

I did, however, get to witness one of the most awesome lightning shows while driving to Sonic to pick up dinner.

I’ve been to New Braunfels a few times, but mostly to go tubing down the river. I remember one spot where the local men sit in their lawn chairs, drinking beer, waiting for the women to go over the little waterfall…where their bikini tops inevitably were washed away. Ahem. I should have gone to the wineries instead…

    Sounds like fun!

Lucky you got rain – we were treated to thunder and lightning at the FIL’s house, and lightning on the drive home last night, but nary a drop of the wet stuff…..
