Y’all know eventually this blog would talk about this. Women are like magpies. Shiny, pretty things grab our eye, and sometimes even our wallet. I confess, though, I am not a fan of diamonds. Don’t get me wrong. I love to look at them, from a geological point of view. A diamond in the rough is far more attractive to me than one already cut. But that’s not to say I don’t admire the precision and art of the cut. Hubby asks me every-so-often if I would like a diamond for an anniversary. Every year I tell him, “Nope, I already have my rock!” I prefer stones with color, but oddly, not colored diamonds. However, I did find a stone I do like:
This is the Asscher cut. Me likey lots. Sadly, I have to wait until a MAJOR anniversary to score something like this. Like maybe my 50th. More likely my 75th, though. If I really want one, though, I can always get a fake one from QVC. They know me by name 😉

Nice rock and nice rack (avatar!)

HAHAHAHA!!!
Well, you did kinda ruled on it 😉

Eh. I like diamonds, but I like a lot of other different types of rocks too. I’m an equal opportunity jewelry wearer.
I do prefer white gold or platinum though. Gold brings out a yellow in my skin.

I should add you to my bloglist (along with a few others I keep thinking I should) but I’m too lazy. Xbrad is my IT guy (he set up most of my blog when I switched it over to WP) … but I think I owe him some brownies or something before I can goad him into doing it for me.

Aggie’s pretty good around the computer, I’m sure she could help you out. I’d do it too, if you want.

Dude, I’m lucky to get my email. But WP is pretty simple to use.
Carin, just go to “Links”, and click on “Add Links”. Then fill in the blanks for name, and web addy, and don’t forget to click on the “blogroll” box. Then save and you’re done 🙂

what does the blogroll box do? I don’t think I’ve ever clicked that. I have added. Once or twice.

they tell a man he has to spend 3 months salary to buy a wedding ring. what a crock of shhhhh! any girl who demands that is not worth the effort. do you know how many people I can help in this world with 29k?!
September 16th, 2011 at 10:01 AM
HAHAHA!!! I never did subscribe to the “two month” rule for that reason.
September 16th, 2011 at 9:51 AM
I like all kinds of rocks from those I pick up in the fields and pastures to the one you posted. I am coming up on 45th anniversary but I don’t think I will live long enough for that one!
September 16th, 2011 at 10:18 AM
I don’t think I will either 😉
September 16th, 2011 at 10:00 AM
The terrible thing is I probably could figure it out. I’m just too fricken lazy. Part of it is this stupid internet connection. Everything takes FOREVER. And if I have to click around to search … forgetaboutit.
September 16th, 2011 at 10:06 AM
OK. there. I did it. NOW EVERYBODY GET OFF MY BACK.
September 16th, 2011 at 3:07 PM
You could have just emailed me. I’d have been happy to do it for you.
And Aggie!

Don’t worry. The moment I screw this site up, I’ll let you know!

“they tell a man he has to spend 3 months salary to buy a wedding ring.”
Is that before, or after taxes?

My wife never asks for jewelry. She asks for electronics and power tools.
September 16th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
I ask for Legos 🙂
September 16th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
Which are a lot cheaper than electronics and power tools. 🙂
September 16th, 2011 at 3:33 PM
Maybe, but they clash with the decor!
September 16th, 2011 at 12:20 PM
Ya know, “jeweler’s grade” cubic zirconiums LOOK the same as the real thing…..
It’s not how much the man spends on the rock, it’s how well he treats the woman he gives the rock to –
I still love my original engagement ring (we replaced it when I thought that I had lost it right before our 25th anniversary – I was heartbroken!) – we plan on giving it to a future first grandson for his fiancee.

My sweetieheart got a Sapphire and was quite happy with that. Someday, when I win the lottery, I’ll get her … whatever the hell she wants.

Ooh…
*magpie senses tingling*

I need it for a paperweight 😉

Holy cow!! That would be AWESOME!!
September 18th, 2011 at 9:23 PM
Speaking as a card carrying (credit card that is) magpie, CZ is perfectly cool by me. And I, like you, prefer colored stones and actual rock-rocks to diamonds. Gimme a star sapphire, a garnet, a lapis any day over a diamond. Not that I don’t have a few settings picked out that go well with clear sparklies, just not necessarily my first choice. 😉

I vaguely remember reading something about engagement rings and the traditions thereof.
The purpose and point of the 3 month gross wage purchase point was to:
A) Prove genuine intent
B) Prove financial stability to provide for a family
C) Provide enough time for the couple to actually get to know each other
For point C above it is important to move past initial infatuation. It takes time to save up for the equivalent of 3 month’s wages. It takes a year or so to really know somebody. This tradition really isn’t about the bling – it’s all about the commitment the man is pledging for the woman and their eventual children.
Of course this is all based on the version when most people get married in their late teens – early 20’s. And the gal’s father’s consent was a bit more than the non-formality it is now. There is a substance behind the tradition.
As for the stone for the ring, that’s a bit different. White diamonds were not actually THE dominant stone for engagement rings until relatively recently. A deliberate and intensive campaign by a certain diamond company *cough De Beers cough* in the 19th century started changing things. IIRC the blue sapphire was the previously preferred stone. The color Blue represents the virtue of “Loyalty” in most western societies.

BTW the Maternal Unit has always insisted on The Real Deal when it comes to jewelry. I’m given to understand that I’m slated to inherit something north of $50K in worth of her jewelry sometime in the (hopefully very distant) future. 0.o
